Best Comedy Specials on Netflix
Netflix has hours of comedy specials to watch. Before Netflix was as popular as it is today, comedians dreamed of getting a thirty minute special with comedy central or an hour-long special with HBO. But nowadays, Netflix is the penultimate deal for an hour-long special. They host comedy routines from a wide array of comedians that live all over the country. Read through to find out some of our favorites.
Tom Segura – Disgraceful
Disgraceful is Tom Segura’s third special on Netflix, and his best one yet. Segura has been a force in the LA comedy scene for many years, but today he is one of the city’s biggest names. Disgraceful has long-form stories that span 9+ minutes but keep you laughing every step of the way. With this hour he has perfected his role on stage as the loveable asshole. He insists that he’s a jerk, raving about how good it feels to close an elevator door on somebody, but somehow you’re still rooting for him. His position on stage allows him to be especially critical of inept people. He describes how many people don’t understand how he can be a white guy from Spain. If you don’t understand how that can happen, in the words of Tom Segura, “what’s going on is you failed social studies.”
Dave Chappelle – The Age of Spin
Dave Chappelle’s 2017 special The Age of Spin is Chappelle’s first LA performance in 10 years. However, you wouldn’t think it unless he told you so. Chappelle is cool and confident on stage as he talks of his run-ins with O.J. Simpson, his opinions on Bill Cosby, and his misadventures over the last ten years. Chappelle’s comedy genius relies on his great ability to act and tell stories. He can do an impression of anyone under the sun, and he always know exactly the right details to include and which ones to leave out. Part of his charm is how positions himself as so separated from the every man. He talks of his time in Hollywood, running into Kanye West, and the power he holds as a celebrity. This leaves you wanting to hear more about his lifestyle. Stories aside, Chappelle is speaking his truth louder than ever in this special. He has ten years of social issues to catch up on, and not all his opinions are sugar coated. We don’t advise this one for the faint of heart. In his own words “man up, ladies and gentlemen, or you’re not gonna make it through the show.”
Gary Gulman – It’s About Time
It’s About Time is Gary Gulman’s second Netflix venture. The hour-long special is in his classic style, presenting snarky, smart quips about everyday experiences. His intelligence is his charm. Gulman is able to get a laugh just based on his vocabulary usage alone. He describes how he got duped at a Trader Joe’s. “I was that schmuck. That klutz, that schlump, that schnook, that yutz. Eskimos have a hundred words for snow. Us Jews have a hundred words for loser.”
