Movies We’re Excited For in April
From major releases such as Captain Marvel and Us to box office bombs such as Disney’s live-action Dumbo, 2019 has been an up and down year for movies so far. April promises to be a monster month of movies, with a number of major releases planned, along with some more thoughtful releases that we want to make sure are on your radar.
Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame (April 26): The finale to the Avengers series, Endgame promises to be the cherry on top of one of cinema’s most epic and highest-earning series of all-time. With three of the top-10 highest-earning movies of all time belonging to the Avengers series, there is no doubt that this finale will draw massive crowds. But whether or not Avengers: Endgame will live up to the hype is anyone’s guess. With Tony Stark and crew back to face Thanos in a final showdown, anticipation is high, but the trailer gives us very few answers. We will have to wait and see when the movie hits theatres April 26.
The Curse of La Llorana: This horror flick comes from scare-master James Wan, who has directed or produced a number of the biggest horror films of the past 15 years, such as Saw, The Conjuring and Insidious. The film centers around a social worker who gets into a tangle with La Llorana, or ‘the weeping woman,’ a Latin American legend about a woman who has lost her children and brings misfortune to all those who come near. Starring Linda Cardinelli, of ER and Mad Men fame, this promises to be one of the biggest horror releases of 2019. The Curse of La Llorana will jump into theatres April 19.
Penguins: Released in anticipation of Earth Day on April 22, Disney’s newest live-action nature documentary, Penguins, has more than just beautiful shots of the cute critters from Antarctica. It also tells the story of a young Adélie penguin named Steve, dodging everything from killer whales to seals, threatening to upend his plans to find a partner and start a family. With gorgeous cinematography and the ever-creative storylines pieced together by Disney’s Imagineers, this first Disney nature release since 2017 will not be something to miss. Penguins comes to the big screen on Wednesday, April 17.
Little: Like Big, Little shows us that sometimes we can get a second chance in life. Regina Hall and Marsai Martin star as Jordan Sanders, a middle aged-woman who suddenly wakes up as her 13-year-old self at a critical juncture in her career. With the pressures of adulthood mounting on Jordan, this comedy, written by Tina Gordon Chism (Drumline, Peeples) is a tale that explores the effects of success and how we might go about growing up if we had a second chance at it. You can find Little at a theatre near you from April 12.
While this is definitely not an exhaustive list of April releases, there are just a few that are not to be missed. 2019 will continue to be a year of diverse and exciting releases.
