Song that Give Thanks
Halloween has come and gone, and usually after spooky season, everyone immediately turns their attention to Christmas. However, a lot of people forget that there is a holiday wedged between the two: Thanksgiving.
There are some notable Thanksgiving movies out there (read: “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving), but there aren’t too many Thanksgiving songs. To get you in the thankful spirit, we curated a list of songs that are all about giving thanks in some way or another.
“Thank U Next” – Ariana Grande
You know this song had to be on the list. One of the most iconic songs of 2018, “Thank U Next” was all about saying thank you to our past lovers for the relationships they taught us. Miss Grande even went as far as to drop her former lovers by name, referencing her ex-boyfriends Mac Miller (who tragically passed away last year), Pete Davidson, and Big Sean. The song is all about taking what you learned from a past relationship and applying it to the next one, all while bidding your exes goodbye with a polite, but still sassy, “thank u next.”
With such infectious lyrics, it is not surprising that “thank u next” was one of the biggest songs of 2018.
“Thnks fr th Mmrs” – Fall Out Boy
If you’re looking for an angsty song, this is the one for you. Like the last song on our list. “Thnks fr the Mmrs” is all about reflecting on a past relationship. However, this one is a bit more spiteful than Ariana’s. You can’t help but feel the sarcastic vibes when the band yells thanks for the memories, making it clear that their last relationship was certainly a mistake. If you’re needing a good song to scream to, this is certainly the one.
“Thank You” – Dido
While this song is a lot more calm than the others mentioned on this list, it’s lyrics still packs a powerful punch. Over a soft guitar beat, Dido sings about her struggles with depression and hard times, thanking an unknown individual for “giving her the best day of [her] life.” With the quiet drum beats and rain sounds on the background of the track, this is the perfect song to listen to while cuddled under a blanket and a cup of tea.
“What a Wonderful World” – Louis Armstrong
We had to finish off this list with a classic, and nothing works better than “What a Wonderful World.” This song is the perfect representation of what it means to not only give thanks, but to stop, and take a look around and appreciate the world surrounding you. When we’re going through a rough patch in our lives, it can be easy to forget about all the good that is present in our lives, and this song serves as a reminder to stop and smell the roses. Armstrong’s deep bass voice is beyond calming and certainly fits the energy that this song puts out into the world.
