You may have once witnessed a person eating a meal or snack that either inspired you or made you sick to your stomach. This week, OMG investigates the most outlandish and unique eats that have ever been ingested. Keep reading to discover some tasty ideas or maybe even be reintroduced to your gag reflex.
Fake and Instant Foods
Ever enjoyed Bac-Os on your salad or baked potato? I bet you have. Starting in the 50’s and 60’s, instant and fake foods hit our country with a bang! People suddenly started using artificially flavored and engineered foods like Cheez Whiz, instant mashed potatoes in their cooking, drinking freeze-dried coffee, and consuming Tang. Yum!
Canned Soup Casseroles
Imagine yourself back in the 1950’s. Your family just got their first TV. Why would you spend time cooking when you could be watching your new picture box? The solution is to open a can of cream-of-something, dump in some frozen or canned veggies, and add pre-cooked meat of some sort– problem solved. Now, enjoy the new episode of I Love Lucy.
Jell-O Salads
As Americans entered the 1900’s, pre-packaged food was all the rage. Leave it to Jell-O to introduce mixing all sorts of foods into a gelatin-based Salmon Mold or Ring Around the Tuna.
Oven-Frying All Things in Cereal
Becoming more diet aware, Americans were sold on the concept of ‘frying’ things in the oven with cereal-based coatings. Dip food in something that will stick, roll it in crushed cereal, bake, and enjoy a ‘healthier’ version of your favorite foods.
Bacon, Bacon, Bacon!
If you haven’t yet tried brown sugar covered bacon appetizers—you haven’t lived. You might enjoy bacon for breakfast, but this crispy and salty protein is not restricted to mornings anymore. These days we have our choice of bacon cupcakes, chocolate chip and bacon cookies, candied bacon, and recently—bacon grease smothered toast. I feel a heart-attack coming on.
Kooky Chip Flavors
I can recall enjoying sour cream and onion potato chips by the pool, but that is no longer satisfactory. Engineers now provide cinnamon roll potato chips, Thai sweet chili chips, even crunchy snacks that taste like biscuits and gravy. Mmmmmmm.
Freaky Fried Things
Have you been to the state fair lately? No? Then, you probably haven’t tasted a fried Oreo. It sounds weird, but it will set your taste buds on fire. You also don’t want to miss fried butter, fried ice cream, and you definitely can’t miss a deep-fried Twinkie. Wash it all down with some deep-fried water while you’re at it.
Over the Rainbow
Unicorns are all the rage lately. But, the colorful magic of these fictional creature doesn’t stop there. These days, you can enjoy rainbow colored bagels, cakes, and other treats. Not ending at the rainbow, we’ve recently moved on to the galaxy. Now you can taste purple, white, and black foods that are reminiscent of a universe in outer space.
