Netflix has transformed itself from a simple movie and television streaming into a media empire. Several Netflix original movies and television shows have won several accolades and have given projects put out by major production companies a run for their money. Take a list at some of our favorite Netflix original television shows that you need to watch during your next binge session.
1. Orange is the New Black
It’s certainly no surprise that “Orange is the New Black” became a worldwide phenomenon when it first premiered back in 2013. If you’re one of the few who hasn’t binged the entire series, it follows Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) who gets sentenced to prison for helping smuggle drugs years ago in her past. Chapman is taken away from her comfortable life as a P.R. executive and whisked away to the not so glamorous life at Litchfield Prison. The show’s last season aired on July 26th, 2019. Throughout its history, the show won numerous accolades such as several Emmy Awards and Golden Globe nominations. The show is beloved by fans for its ability to weave social commentary regarding race, class, gender and the prison system with humor.
Another project of “Orange is the New Black”’s Jenji Kohan is “G.L.O.W.” a television series following the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling circuit that was founded by wrestling promoter and television producer David McLane. The series first premiered in June 2017 and the third season debuted on August 9, 2019. The show stars Alison Brie as Ruth “Zoya the Destroya” Wilder, a struggling actress who acts in the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling promotion, along with her ex-best friend Debbie “Liberty Belle” Eagan, who is portrayed by actress Betty Gilpin. Gilpin was
nominated for an Emmy for “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series” for her role.
In “You,” Joe Goldberg, a manager of a bookstore portrayed by Penn Badgley of “Gossip Girl” fame, meets Guinevere Beck in his bookstore. He quickly falls in love with her, and that love turns into an obsession. He begins to rely on stalking and social media to track her every move, and viewers will be shocked to see how far he will go to keep her in his life. After moving to Netflix from Lifetime, “You” took all of social media by storm. Viewers were on the edge of the seat waiting to see what would happen next. Not only did the series star Badgley, but it starred Shay Mitchell from “Pretty Little Liars” as well as Elizabeth Lail from “Once Upon a Time.”
