Top Hip Hop Hits of Summer 2018
2018 has been a great year for music, with tons of new releases from the best in hip hop. If you’re looking for new songs to jam to while you’re hanging out this summer, check out our list of the best hip hop hits of 2018.
“La Di Da” – The Internet
Back on the scene with their first release in three years, The Internet’s Hive Mind is just what we needed. This album is full of the funkiest bass grooves and catchy choruses from lead singer Syd. “La Di Da” is quintessential Internet in their best form. The opening groove will have you wanting to get out your chair seconds into the first listen. If that doesn’t get you up and dancing, the accompanying drum beat and Syd’s soothing voice are sure to do the trick.
“Pop Another” – Maxo Kream
Houston native Maxo Kream samples Tame Impala on this hard-hitting track from his latest release, Punken. The southern storyteller describes the debaucherous environment he grew up around in Houston’s inner city with excruciating detail. His flow is nonstop and has little repetition. There are enough lines in this one song to fill a book. This rapper is clever and fun to listen to, and you’ll love listening and learning the words
“92 Explorer” – Post Malone
Posty’s second LP Beerbongs & Bentleys debuted this past April and broke the all-time first week streaming record previously held by Drake’s 2017 album More Life. Since most album sales are made through streaming nowadays, rappers are incentivized to create incredibly long albums, and Post’s album has a whopping 18 songs. Overall, the album is filled with upbeat radio-ready songs that blur together after a while. We’ve sifted through the 65 minute LP, and we recommend putting “92 Explorer” on your summer hits playlist. The song’s beat and chorus are as catchy as they come. You’ll be singing along by the second listen.
“Pet Cemetery” – Tierra Whack
Newcomer to the hip hop scene Tierra Whack is pushing the boundaries with her newest album Whack World. Each of the 15 songs is exactly one minute long, and the moods from song to song change drastically. This creates an intentionally disorienting experience for listeners. Concept aside, Whack’s voice is crisp and beautiful in this album. Her songs are short and fun. “Pet Cemetery” is about missing her dog while on tour and even samples some barking dogs. We love the simplicity of the beat; just a piano and a couple of drum hits back Whack’s lyrics.
“Six 4 Dreams” – Ramirez
One of just three rappers signed to G59 records, Ramirez creates an amazing sound on his latest project Blood Diamonds 2. The entire tape combines 90’s rap samples, 70’s disco elements, and Ramirez’s own aggressive rap style to create a unique feel. We love “Six 4 Dreams.” The song begins with a sample from 90’s rap duo 8Ball & MJG alongside a smooth jazzy saxophone. After the beat drops, Ramirez flows over the saxophone and thick baseline like a true player. “Six 4 Dreams” is an excellent hit for your summer playlist. Be sure to check out the whole tape if you like that one.
