Top Summer Blockbusters
Last year’s box office numbers were so dismal that many wondered if Netflix and streaming at home had finally replaced going to the movies. This summer will put that theory to the test as Hollywood brings out its heavy hitters in a string of summer blockbusters that have something for everyone. If another Star Wars and Mission Impossible don’t do it for you, then how about another Jurassic Park and Incredibles movie, or a feminine twist on Ocean’s 11, with Ocean’s 8 starring an all-female cast. If 55-year-old Tom Cruise still mountain climbing without ropes can’t get people to the movies this summer, then maybe it really will be time to stay home and binge-watch your favorite Netflix series.
On May 25th, Solo: A Star Wars Story will kick off the summer season with an action-packed prequel. Alden Ehrenreich plays Han Solo as a young pilot before he meets Luke and Leia. The movie shows how the cocky, talented Solo becomes involved with Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian, played by Donald Glover. He also comes face to face with Dryden Vos, a formidable gangster played by Paul Bettany.
Ocean’s 8 debuts on June 8th with Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett heading up an all-female cast that includes Mindy Kaling, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, and Awkwafina. The movie offers the same quirky characters, surprising plot twists, and dry humor of Stephen Soderbergh’s original Ocean’s 11 series, without the testosterone. Bullock plays Debbie Ocean, sister to Danny (George Clooney’s character), who gathers a group of women to pull off a heist at the Met Gala in New York City.
Incredibles 2 comes out on June 15th. This sequel highlights a baby with laser vision and picks up right where the first movie ended with Elastigirl rising to fame while Bob and the kids try to adjust to “normal” life.
On June 22nd, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will be released to the delight of Chris Pratt fans. With Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Pratt returns to the island to save the dinosaurs from a volcanic eruption in this latest of the Jurassic series.
Another Marvel hero movie comes out on July 6th with Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, and Michael Douglas. Ant-Man and the Wasp takes place after the Infinity War and spotlights thief-turned-superhero Scott Lang who struggles to balance his dual life.
Eighth Grade comes out on July 13th with Elsie Fisher starring in this coming-of-age comedy about surviving middle school that is directed by Bo Burnham.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! comes out on July 20th. This sequel to the 2008 musical comedy stars Meryl Strep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Cher.
On July 27th, Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt in the latest installment of the Mission Impossible series. Mission: Impossible – Fallout is directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who also directed Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation in 2015, and features the usual heart-stopping stunts that fans have come to expect from their favorite spy.
On August 3rd, Mile 22 debuts with Mark Wahlberg as an intelligence operative trying to smuggle a highly valuable target out of the country. It is directed by Peter Berg who has worked three times with Wahlberg on Certified Fresh films.
